Universal Grooves on the Surf Coast,  is the second in a series of performance workshops provided by community drum and dance group, Wild Moves and proudly supported by the Surf Coast Shire where the community can engage with professional performers who bring cultural diversity to the Surf Coast. Drums are provided by Wild Moves but need to be booked in advanced.

Valanga Khoza was born in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. He grew up in a traditional setting surrounded by lively singing, drumming and dancing. The Limpopo area is rich in traditional healers, orators and storytellers, highly respected throughout Africa. These were his neighbours. Their nightly ceremonies carried songs and rhythms passed down through thousands of years. Valanga carries these influences through his songs and storytelling. He is also influenced by his travels throughout the world that were driven by his struggle against racism and his fight for freedom of black people in South Africa.
13 years ago Valanga began working with singer and songwriter Andrea Khoza. She is a founding member of the highly acclaimed acappella group "AKASA" and has sung and recorded with many respected musicians over her career. Over the past 2 years she has codirected and conducted the Boite's Millenium Chorus and Schools Choruses.  Valanga and Andrea travel regularly to South Africa where they immerse themselves in the music and culture of today. Recently, they have released their first full length album together "Vuswa - the source of life"

THE INTERACTIVE CONCERT
Valanga and Andrea will take you on a journey  from rich vocal harmonies, rhythmic guitar, traditional stick drums to the lilting tones of kalimba. The songs are from their new album as well as some old favourites that range from township jive to haunting traditionally inspired melodies. All songs composed by South African born Valanga, tell stories of the past and present, a journey reminding us of our  shared humanity.
So join them! Come and sing and drum  the joyous music of South Africa with Valanga and Andrea Khoza. The songs will be both original songs by Valanga and traditional songs in 3 or 4 part harmony. Together, Valanga and Andrea work as a team, presenting the interactive performance with many stories that will give you an insight into the South Africa of yesterday and the South Africa today. They will have you singing, moving and grooving!

  1. This was an amazing night with the opportunity to first see Valangha and Andrea perform in such an intimate and cosy setting and listening to their beautiful harmonies and rhythms. And then the fun of being brought into the performance, being guided to play simple drum rhythms, sing, and dance. For those with instrumental skills they were invited to come on stage and join the band. Valangha and Andrea have such an inclusive style and skills to make it all feel easy to join in. I love this concept of interactive performance. Well done Universal Grooves!!
